How to build a Smithing Station

To upgrade your weapons in Grounded 2, you’ll first need to unlock the blueprints for the Smithing Station. These blueprints can be purchased from the Science Shop section of the Ranger Station for 500 Science points. Access to these blueprints doesn’t become available in the shop until you’ve progressed far enough in the main story to reach the Art of War mission.

You’ll also need the following resources to craft the Smithing Station:

  • 1 – Brittle Whetstone
  • 1- Brittle plating
  • 4- Crude Rope
  • 2 – Sap
Brittle Marble

Brittle plating is crafted at the workbench by using Brittle Marble Shards. These Brittle Marble Shards are gathered by hammering marble, which are the smooth, round stones found around the map. You only need the base version of the Omni-Hammer to scavenge this resource.

Brittle Whetstone is crafted at the workbench by using Brittle Quartzite Shards. These Brittle Quartzite Shards are collected by hammering Brittle Quartzite. These are reddish brown rocks found in the area in and around the stink bugs, as shown in the image above.

How to upgrade weapons and armor

Place a Smithing Station at your base to upgrade the weapons and armor you’ve crafted. This smithing process won’t count anything you have stowed away in your storage, so make sure you have the items you want to upgrade in your inventory.

The same rock pieces you needed to build the Smithing Station are the same pieces you need to enhance your gear.

Brittle Plating is needed to upgrade the armor with better defense and durability, and the Brittle Whetstone is used to enhance the damage and durability of weapons.

How to get smithing resources faster

Upgrading your gear at the Smithing Station gets pricey, and these resources aren’t always super abundant and easy to find. I recommend collecting marble and quartz whenever you see those rocks.

For example: A level 1 weapon upgrade costs five Brittle Whetstone for a 10% increase to damage and durability, while a level 2 upgrade costs 10 Brittle Whetstone for a 20% increase to damage and durability, and level 3 costs 15 Brittle Whetstone for a 30% increase.

For armor, a level 1 upgrade costs two Brittle Plating for a 10% increase to defense and durability, while level 2 costs four Brittle Plating for a 20% increase, and level 3 costs six Brittle Plating for a 30% increase.

If you grab the Optical Disk from the Ice Cream Cart section of the map and bring it back to a Ranger Station, you can unlock a Smithing recipe in the Science Shop for crafting Brittle Whetstones. This recipe costs 1,000 Science Points and requires 1 Sap and 1 Larva Spike will produce 1 Brittle Whetstone. These resources are much more abundant and will help you get the upgrades faster.

Grabbing the Optical Disk from the Pine Hill and bringing it back to a Ranger Station will unlock a Smithing recipe in the Science Shop for crafting Brittle Plating. This recipe costs 1,000 Science Points and requires 1 sap and 1 Grub Hide to make 1 Brittle Plating. These are abundant resources as well, worth using for the extra Brittle Plating to make your upgrades.
