Are you curious as to how you’d get Pokemon from fossils and amber in Pokemon Legends: Z-A? While you can catch over 200 creatures in the game, a select few only come from specific items. Oh, and you also have to complete a side quest just to unlock an important function.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Aerodactyl, Tyrunt, and Amaura guide
Before you start looking for various items, you have to progress further into the campaign until you have access to Side Mission 27: Restored from a Fossil. The quest takes place in the Pokemon Research Lab in the southern part of the map.
Restored from a Fossil quest steps
Here’s what you need to do if you want to have Pokemon from fossils and amber in Pokemon Legends: Z-A:
- Go to the second-floor laboratory of the Pokemon Research Lab and talk to an scientist named Reg to start the side quest.
- Reg will give you 20,000 gold to purchase either a Jaw Fossil or Sail Fossil from the Stone Emporium. The establishment is due north of the Pokemon Research Center.
- Buy either of the items and hand it over to Reg, who’ll then reward you with a new Pokemon.
- Reg will also tell you that you can give him additional fossil and amber items if you want the machine to create other creatures.

What kinds of Pokemon come from fossil and amber items?
You can get the following Pokemon via the items and the use of Reg’s machine:
- Jaw Fossil – Costs 20,000x gold; unlocks the Tyrunt (Rock/Dragon).
- Sail Fossil – Costs 20,000x gold; unlocks the Amaura (Rock/Ice).
- Old Amber – Costs 30,000x gold; unlocks the Aerodactyl (Rock/Flying).
Note 1: Reg gives you 20,000x gold at the start, so you can buy either the Jaw Fossil or Sail Fossil, then either the Tyrunt or Amaura is considered free. Just amass enough gold to purchase the items for the other two creatures.
Note 2: All Pokemon created from the machine will be at level 20.

Which Pokemon is the best choice: Aerodactyl, Tyrunt, or Amaura?
Choosing a Pokemon from fossils and amber in Pokemon Legends: Z-A comes down to preference. But there are a few things to consider:
- Aerodactyl has a better combination of types–i.e. Rock/Flying–making them strong against other classifications with hardly any overlaps.
- Aerodactyl has no other evolutions. If you can purchase an Aerodactylite Stone, you can unlock and use their Mega Evolution immediately.
- Conversely, Tyrunt and Aurorus still need to reach level 39 for their regular evolutions into the Tyrantrum and Aurorus, respectively. They need a lot of XP before they can use their Mega Evolutions.
