How To Change PS5 Themes

Nostalgia is a beautiful thing, which is why Sony finally opted to make its previously limited-time 30th Anniversary themes a permanent part of the PS5 experience. If you’re looking to breathe a bit of old-school PlayStation love into your PS5 UI and sound profile, you can choose themes based on previous generations of Sony’s consoles–ranging from PS1 to PS4–for a healthy dose of retro charm.

Changing your PS5 theme is an easy affair that just requires a quick trip into your system settings, so you’ll be able to swap between these unique aesthetics at any time. Here’s how to change your PS5 theme.

How to change themes on PS5

To change the theme on your PS5, you’ll first need to go to Settings by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of your homescreen. Scroll down and select System > Appearance > Appearance and Sound.

Here, you can select between PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, or Default (PS5). Each of these themes will affect both the look and sound of your system, though the core PS5 UI won’t be affected much. Primarily, you’ll notice the backgrounds of system pages will match the color scheme of the generation of whichever console you pick, as will the sounds played when navigating the UI.

Sadly, the console-specific startup sounds present in the original 30th Anniversary theme packs didn’t return when Sony brought the themes back. Hopefully, we’ll someday get a chance to enjoy those again.

At the bottom of the theme selection screen, you can preview the general vibe and color scheme of each generation. Luckily, it’s easy to jump back into the Settings and change up the theme at any time, so you’re never stuck with any aesthetic or sound profile you don’t like.

Customization doesn’t end with themes, though. You can also choose between a wide variety of backgrounds for your Welcome screen. Check out how to change PS5 your background.
