Horror director Osgood Perkins has slated Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix series Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
The show, which is the latest chapter in the writer’s anthology series exploring famous killers, focuses on the notorious titular serial killer, who notably inspired fictional creations such as Norman Bates in Psycho.
Perkins, who is the son of Bates actor Anthony Perkins (who is also depicted in the series), explained in an interview with TMZ why he “wouldn’t watch [the series] with a 10-foot pole”.
He criticised streamers for upselling true crime and producing “glamourous and meaningful content”, and is concerned that culture is being “reshaped in real time by Overlords”.
Perkins added that it is “increasingly devoid of context and that the Netflix-ization of real pain [ie the authentic human experiences wrought by ‘actual events’] is playing for the wrong team”.
Speaking further about portraying historical events, the director said they should be “peering behind the veil into the unknowable and loving each other through expansive, new art”.

The Ed Gein Story recently topped the Netflix charts despite receiving criticism at the show’s violence and brutality, with The Guardian calling the season “utterly devoid of morality”.
The show’s second season, The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, was criticised by subject Erik Menendez, who labelled it a “dishonest portrayal”.
However, Murphy defended the series, telling E! News: “I think that’s interesting because I know he hasn’t watched the show. So I find that curious. I hope he does watch it. I think if he did watch it he would be incredibly proud of Cooper Koch who plays him.”
Meanwhile, Perkins – who has directed Longlegs and The Monkey – revealed earlier this year that he would never helm a James Bond movie following Amazon’s purchase of the franchise.
“No, because fuck Jeff Bezos,” he said in a Reddit AMA.
