‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ live-action adaptation to release 2027

Sony’s live-actation adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn has been pencilled in for a 2027 release, with filming set to begin next year.

Back in 2022, Sony confirmed it was working with Netflix on a live-action adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, with The Umbrella Academy’s Steve Blackman set to lead the series. However those plans fell through last year after Blackman was accused of “toxic, bullying” behaviour in a report by Rolling Stone. “These allegations from a handful of disgruntled employees are completely false and outrageous,”  Blackman responded, via a representative.

Earlier this year, Sony announced it was pivoting to a live-action Horizon Zero Dawn movie. “Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen,” said head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash. The project had been in the “early stages” of development, but a new update was shared over the weekend.

Legal documents filed as part of Sony’s ongoing lawsuit with Tencent over Horizon Zero Dawn “clone” Light Of Motiram reveal that the script for their movie adaptation is finished and Sony are currently looking for a director (via The GamePost).

“We are in development for a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures,” Qizilbash said. “We already have a working script and are actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027. The live-action film follows the recent collaborations between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions on the 2022 film Uncharted and the 2023 film Gran Turismo.” There’s no information about cast yet.

Sony has also confirmed a movie based on Helldivers 2 is in the works alongside an anime adaptation of Ghost Of Tsushima, which is set to premiere in 2027.  Sony is also working with Amazon Prime Video on a live-action adaptation of God Of War that will take heavy inspiration from the 2018 reboot. It comes after HBO’s adaptation of The Last Of Us became a global hit.
