Hollow Knight: Silksong reportedly lives up to all the hype, according to gamers who’ve played the long-awaited sequel at Gamecom.
Hollow Knight: Silksong has become one of the most anticipated games in recent years. Originally planned as an expansion for 2017’s fiendishly difficult metroidvania Hollow Knight, developers Team Cherry later decided to turn it into a full-blown sequel.
Hollow Knight: Silksong was set to launch in 2023 but was indefinitely delayed and Team Cherry has been very quiet since. At the start of the year, they broke their silence to confirm the game was still in development and hadn’t been cancelled following online speculation.
Things have looked more promising in recent weeks though. Developers have confirmed the game will definitely launch in 2025 and a playable demo of Hollow Knight: Silksong is currently available at both the Xbox and Nintendo booths at Gamescom 2025. The release date of the handheld Xbox ROG Ally has seemingly confirmed a launch window for Hollow Knight: Silksong as well.
Later today (August 21) Team Cherry will make a “special announcement” about the game. Fans can tune in to their YouTube channel at 3:30pm BST or watch below:
Some fans had been worried that Hollow Knight: Silksong couldn’t possibly live up to all the hype but according to gamers who’ve played a new demo at Gamescom, the sequel has been worth the wait.

“Yes, we’ve been waiting many, many years for this sequel, but everything at this stage points to it being worth it,” said IGN after 20 minutes with the game. “Each aspect feels authored and prescribed to a clear vision — a piece of playable art that is as fun to wield as it is to watch (I should know, the gamescom queue was very long).
“It may have been the shortest of demos, but so far, Silksong is very much singing to me, maybe even more than the original.”
“If you’ve ever worried that Hollow Knight Silksong has accumulated so much hype that it couldn’t possibly live up to the oversized expectations placed upon its shoulders, I’m here to put your mind at ease. Team Cherry is clearly operating as a studio ready to meet the challenge head-on, rather than succumb to the pressure,” wrote Gamesradar. “I feel pretty good about saying, yes, this is the game you’ve hoped for during all those years,” added Xbox Wire’s preview.
Hollow Knight: Silksong will launch for Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation and PC as well as being a Day One release for Xbox Game Pass. A firm release date should be confirmed later today.
