Released today via Netflix‘s official accounts, the opening minutes mark possibly the darkest season opener in the series. After four long seasons of waiting, we finally know what happened to Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) when he disappeared into the Upside Down in season one.
While Will returned safely at the end of that season, the character was never able to return to his normal life afterward, scarred by what had happened to him. In the first five minutes of season five, it is revealed that Will came face-to-face with none other than Vecna.
The clip opens up with a petrified Will singing The Clash’s ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’ in an attempt to soothe himself to sleep, but is awoken by the roar of a Demogorgon. Will is chased through the woods by the Demogorgon, before he climbs up a tree. He falls off the tree soon after and is knocked unconscious, only to wake up finding himself being gagged by Vecna.
Vecna warns Will: “You and I, we are going to do such beautiful things together, William. Such beautiful things.”
