Lin-Manuel Miranda has announced that the Hamilton movie is coming to theaters nationwide this fall. During a surprise reveal on The Tonight Show this week, Miranda shared that the filmed version of the original Broadway production will hit the big screen on September 5, 2025—just in time to mark the show’s 10-year anniversary.
“We always wanted to release it theatrically,” Miranda told host Jimmy Fallon. “But then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home.” That streaming release came via Disney+ in 2020, where it became a global sensation. Unlike a traditional film adaptation, the Hamilton movie is a live stage recording captured in 2016 with the original Broadway cast. That includes Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton. Other standout performances include Renee Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, and Christopher Jackson.

Originally slated for an October 2021 theatrical debut, the film was fast-tracked to Disney+ at the height of the pandemic. Disney acquired distribution rights for $75 million, making it one of the most expensive film rights deals ever for a stage show. The move paid off: the film earned 12 Emmy nominations and won two, including Outstanding Variety Special.
This year’s theatrical release adds to a series of events marking Hamilton’s decade-long impact on pop culture, including a reunion performance at the 2025 Tony Awards.
