Ghostrunner Devs Reveal Next Game, A First-Person Souls-Like Set During The Napoleonic Wars

Ghostrunner studio One More Level revealed its next game, Valor Mortis, during Gamescom Opening Night Live. While the studio’s previous Ghostrunner titles were set in a cyberpunk world that prioritized speed, agility, and precision swordplay, Valor Mortis offers a different experience with its blend of first-person souls-like action, metroidvania-inspired levels, and a more methodical approach to melee combat.

Set in a warped version of war-torn Eastern Europe during the Napoleonic Wars, players step into the boots of a resurrected French soldier who must master the corrupting power of a mysterious, plague-like Nephtoglobin substance to save humanity. The battlefield has become infested with terrifying creatures, and as the revived Grande Armée soldier known only as William, skill and horrifying new powers are the only things that’ll keep you alive when you face off against twisted creatures and Napoleon’s Eternal Guard.

The reveal trailer teased some of the gameplay of Valor Mortis, as you can expect to switch between ranged and melee options to take on enemies, or powerful abilities to help you survive a skirmish.

“With Valor Mortis, we wanted to try something new and original–a darker experience, while still offering players a true challenge,” One More Level CEO Szymon Bryla said in a press statement. “After Ghostrunner, we knew we had the foundation to create an FPP title, but this time in a souls-like genre. At the same time, we wanted to stay true to what we do best–making demanding games for hardcore players, set in an engaging, expansive world, while showing that the studio has grown since our previous projects. Valor Mortis is a fresh, new and original take on the souls-like genre that we can’t wait for players to get their hands on.”

Valor Mortis doesn’t have a release date yet, but it will be coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
