‘Ghost Of Yōtei’ team celebrated ‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ delay

Ghost Of Yōtei’s creative director has said the entire time celebrated with champagne when Grand Theft Auto 6 was delayed.

Ghost Of Yōtei is the long-awaited sequel to 2020’s hugely successful Ghost Of Tsushima and is due to launch next month exclusively for PlayStation 5. While the original game focused on Jin Sakai, the last samurai, and his fight for the freedom of Japan, Yōtei is set in a completely different time period and features brand new protagonist Atsu.

For a long while, Grand Theft Auto 6 was also scheduled to launch within the same release window before the game was pushed back to May 26, 2026 earlier this year. In a statement, Rockstar explained that Grand Theft Auto 6 was being delayed so they can deliver “the level of quality” fans expect after a “truly humbling” level of interest and excitement.

In a new interview with MinnMax, creative director Nate Fox was asked if the team at Suckerpunch celebrated with champagne when the Grand Theft Auto 6 delay was confirmed. “We’re all still hungover. Multi-month hangover. That was a great day,” replied Fox.

At the end of 2024, it was reported that several studios were delaying their games due to Grand Theft Auto 6’s unknown release date. Earlier this month, several games were delayed following the surprise-announcement of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s September launch to avoid competing with the “Grand Theft Auto 6 of indie games”.

In recent weeks, there have been rumours that Grand Theft Auto 6 would be delayed once more but a former Rockstar employee has dismissed that speculation as clout-chasing. “Rockstar had a free choice and picked May 26. They’re confident,” explained Obbe Vermeij. “They’ll make the final call five months out.”

Earlier this year Strauss Zelnick, the boss of Grand Theft Auto 6’s publisher Take Two, said he was sure the game wouldn’t be delayed again. “My level of conviction is very, very high. Rockstar does have a lot of other things going on, but this is of course the primary focus,” he explained. “We try not to pump expectations, right? I think Rockstar’s whole stock and trade is to have these extraordinary expectations and still beat them. I know that’s their goal. I know it’s going to be an amazing game. The rest we’ll see in the fullness of time.”

In other news, Deus Ex writer Austin Grossman has hit out at mega fan Elon Musk, saying his praise is the “worst legacy” of the game.
