Gene Gallagher’s Villanelle share heavy debut single ‘Hinge’ and announce UK tour

Villanelle have released their heavy debut single ‘Hinge’ and shared details of a UK tour – check out all the details below.

Today (September 10), the UK trio – comprised of frontman Gene Gallagher, guitarist Ben Taylor and bassist Jack Schiavo – shared the grunge-inflected track, which arrives as the group are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming EP.

Drawing from the sound of Black Sabbath, Nirvana, and Deftones – and inspired by the anxious delirium of a bad hangover – Gallagher described the track as “a proper right-hook of a song” largely made up of “heavy guitars” while speaking exclusively to NME recently.

“That’s my favourite tone of any song: just really chuggy chords and really fucking distorted,” he told us. “All my favourite songs are like that – very punk rock. It’s just an aggressive song. I want it to sound like having a freakout. The lyrics are anxious as fuck.”

Schiavo added: “Coincidentally, it’s the first song we ever wrote and also a punch in the face, which is exactly what you want to bring for a first song. It’s got a bite to it. It’s abrasive, but in a really great way.”

Taylor added in a press release: “‘Hinge’ is just simple and high energy. Anyone can play it, but no one can play it like us.”

The upcoming winter shows follow Villanelle closing out 2024 with a sold-out UK tour, despite having no music out whilst on the trek. They also supported Gene’s dad Liam on his ‘Definitely Maybe’ 30th anniversary tour the same year, with Liam later hitting out at claims of nepotism.

When speaking to NME, Gene said watching his dad perform at the Oasis Live ’25 dates made him want to pick up a guitar “straight away”, with Taylor agreeing that it was a special moment for them as a group.

“It’s really special as well to have been there with your bandmates and witnessing this. I’m sure thousands of people in the crowd would have been like, ‘Fuck, we need to get a band together’,” he said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment, let alone a great gig. Being with your band, it’s hard to not get more excited about what you’re about to do and knowing what’s coming.”

As for what is coming next, they told us their debut EP would be coming out next year, with Gallagher promising they’ll “keep spunking out some tunes”.
