Twenty-two years after the classic mother-daughter body-swap comedy, Freakier Friday proves to be a worthy successor. Rather than simply rehashing the original, this sequel introduces a new generation and a clever double body-swap, making for a fresh and hilarious take on a beloved story.
The film picks up two decades later with Anna (Lindsay Lohan) and Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) facing new problems. Anna, now a music manager and single mom, clashes with her daughter Harper (Julia Butters) when she falls for Eric (Manny Jacinto), the father of Harper’s rival, Lily (Sophia Hammons).

Why Freakier Friday is a Worthy Sequel
After a slightly slow start, the story kicks into high gear during Anna’s bachelorette party, where a mysterious fortune teller sets the stage for the inevitable. The next day, chaos ensues when all four women wake up in each other’s bodies.

While some of the humor in Freakier Friday relies on “how do you do, fellow kids?” jokes, the film generally handles its comedy well, poking fun at both millennial and Gen Z culture. Fans of the original will also appreciate clever throwbacks, including the return of Anna’s former flame, Jake (Chad Michael Murray).

Lohan and Curtis are the true stars of Freakier Friday, proving they haven’t lost their comedic chops. Curtis, in particular, is an absolute riot as the vain and dramatic Lily trapped in Tess’s body. Lohan has the more subtle challenge of portraying a teenager who slowly begins to understand her mother’s love. They’re both fantastic on their own, but they truly shine when they’re together, bouncing off each other with impeccable timing.
Despite some minor pacing issues and a few too many side plots, the film’s emotional core remains strong. The jokes and high jinks are all in service of a deeper message, and the movie’s big emotional moments at the end feel earned.
Ultimately, Freakier Friday is a charming and heartfelt sequel. Thanks to the stellar performances of Lohan and Curtis and a clever new twist, it’s a feel-good film that lives up to the legacy of the original.
