‘Far Cry’ TV adaptation in the works from ‘It’s Always Sunny…’ creator

A TV adaptation of Far Cry is in the works from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-creator Rob Mac.

The original Far Cry was released in 2004 and has spawned a number of sequels with Far Cry 6 launching in 2021. An anthology first-person shooter, the Far Cry games don’t have a central protagonist or setting but they do typically see players working with freedom fighters to take down oppressive leaders. Some entries in the series have been very grounded while others feature sci-fi or supernatural elements.

Over the weekend, Ubisoft accidentally revealed a TV adaptation was in the works. The company shared a news post on their website before swiftly taking it down, but not before fans got a glimpse and shared the news on Reddit.

According to Ubisoft’s deleted post, the Far Cry TV show will be an “anthology drama” and each season will be “set in a new world with a different cast of characters following the video game franchise’s signature standalone storytelling format.”

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-creator Rob Mac will co-create the show alongside Fargo creator Noah Hawley. Hawley will also serve as showrunner while Mac will star in the adaptation.

“This collaboration is really an embarrassment of riches. Far Cry is a psychological tailspin that doesn’t shy away from the darkest and most absurd parts of humanity, which aligns perfectly with FX’s bold and fearless storytelling style,” said Margaret Boykin, head of film and television content at Ubisoft.

Responding to the news, one fan said they were “cautiously optimistic” about the adaptation while another said they were “super excited” with Hawley and Mac onboard. “Who’s Pedro Pascal going to play though,” asked another.

Back in 2023 it was rumoured a seventh Far Cry game was in development at Ubisoft alongside a multiplayer title. It was reported that both games were looking at a late 2025 release date, though Ubisoft refused to comment at the time and no official announcement has ever been made.

In other news, Red Dead Redemption 2 has become the sixth best-selling video game of all time, shifting more copies than the original Pokémon games.
