Every song on ‘The Smashing Machine’ soundtrack

The film sees Dwayne Johnson go through a physical transformation to play the real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr, with Emily Blunt taking on the role of his partner Dawn Staples.

It is based on the 2002 documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life And Times Of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr, and is directed by Benny Safdie, one half of the Safdie Brothers, who are responsible for indie hits Uncut Gems, Good Time and Heaven Knows What.

The film received a 15-minute standing ovation after its world premiere at Venice at the start of this month (September 1), with footage from the event showing Johnson visibly moved to tears.

Johnson and Safdie are already working on their next project together, titled Lizard Music. It is based on a novel by Daniel Pinkwater and it will see Johnson play an elderly figure named Chicken Man who joins a young boy on a fantastic adventure. The film has required Johnson to lose weight, which became a talking point during his appearance at Venice.

NME awarded The Smashing Machine four stars, noting: “Rather than turn Kerr’s opioid addiction and relationship problems into a sensationalised drama, Safdie’s sensitive script offers a great deal of sympathy. One scene has Johnson destroying a door while in the throes of a drug-fuelled rage, another tender, tearful encounter has Dawn explaining how he’s sweet when using, but cold and distant when not.”

“In short, this is a thoroughly entertaining sports biopic that packs one hell of a sentimental gutpunch. It’s smashing stuff.”
