It stars Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul) as historical romance author Carol Sturka, who appears to be the only person immune to an unexplained virus that has transformed the world’s population into optimists.

Apple TV has already ordered a second season of the show, the first new series from Gilligan since Better Call Saul, which ran for six seasons from 2015 to 2022. That itself was a prequel to Breaking Bad, one of the most celebrated television series of all time, which ran on AMC from 2008 to 2013.

Gilligan first got his break writing and producing on The X-Files and its spin-off The Lone Gunmen, and has also served as a writer on feature films including Hancock. For his work on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Gilligan won a Golden Globe, four Emmys and a BAFTA.

Gilligan has stressed that Pluribus is not a Breaking Bad spin-off, despite Seehorn’s lead role and the show being set in Albuquerque. He recently told NME: “It is not in any way, shape or form either of those shows.”

“And that’ll turn some people off,” he added. “There will be plenty of people who tune into Pluribus out of curiosity. ‘Oh, it’s that Breaking Bad guy.’ And they’ll watch 20 minutes of it maybe and say, ‘Ah, nobody’s getting killed. Nobody’s getting their throat cut with a box-cutter. This is not for me. I hate this!’ So be it. That’ll make me sad but it just means the show wasn’t for them.”

The show sees Gilligan reunite with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul composer Dave Porter, who has created an original score for the show.
