Ethan Hawke has revealed he was relieved he didn’t get the lead role in 1997’s Titanic, saying he felt he couldn’t have dealt with the fame.
The actor, who broke through in the ‘90s thanks to roles in Dead Poets Society and Reality Bites, auditioned for the role of Jack Dawson in James Cameron’s epic. The role would eventually go to Leonardo DiCaprio, and in a new interview with GQ Hawke confessed he is relieved it didn’t happen for him.
“I don’t think I would have handled that success as well as Leo,” he said. “He was a fucking Beatle.”
Elsewhere in the interview, he discussed why he has tended to avoid big-budget blockbusters or celebrity endorsements. “I never self-identified as a ‘movie star’. I was allergic to that,” he said. “Having a trademark by my name and making a million dollars – that wasn’t part of my dream.”
He also discussed the awards circuit, which he became apart of in 2002 when he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the drama Training Day.
“I didn’t campaign at all. Nobody took an ad out for me,” he says. “Now, it’s political in a way. We can thank Harvey Weinstein for turning it into a junket. The industry learned that you can make money off those awards, so they started investing.”
