Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are dishing on their new Yorgos Lanthimos black comedy “Bugonia,” in which two conspiracy-obsessed men (including Plemons’ character) kidnap the CEO of a major company (Stone) when they become convinced that she’s an alien who wants to destroy Earth.
“Extra” spoke with the two about the movie, which required Emma to shave her head for her role as Michelle.
Stone wasn’t fazed by the idea of having to shave her head, saying, “That’s such a part of your job as an actor. All these things that, you know, whatever that physical transformation is… There have been films where it’s like, you better put on a bunch of muscle… It’s part of the joy of it is like having all these difference experiences.”
“This was actually the easiest one,” Stone emphasized. It’s much harder to put on 15 lbs. of muscle than it is to just shave your head. It’s quick, easy, and it was really fun.”
Emma reacted to the shaved-head screenings being held in honor of her character, saying, “Those screenings weren’t my idea but it’s pretty funny.”
Jesse dished on how Teddy was one of the most “funny, complex, and tragic” characters he’s ever come across.
He shared, “There was so much that Teddy says that, to me, was like objectively true and there’s so much that seems totally insane. You’re constantly learning a little more about what led him to arrive at these beliefs and, you know, his main mission in life.”
Emma was fascinated by the “tight rope” that her character walks on, saying, “What she’s being accused of by Teddy and what she presents to the world.”
Both Emma and Jesse also reflected on working together again and how this time was different, plus how they spent their downtime between shooting by getting in as much family time as possible.
Emma and Jesse didn’t hang out much off-screen. She explained, “We were working a lot.”
Jesse added, “We had our families that we’re trying to catch up with on the weekends.”
Emma added, “We both have families so there was a lot of, like, cramming in as much family time as you possibly can before we’re stuck back in the basement for very long days.”
“Bugonia” is out October 31.
