Elon Musk has promised to release a “great” video game, created entirely with AI, by the end of 2026.
Last November, Musk said his new AI studio xAI was going to “make games great again” but over the past twelve months, he’s been focused on developing X assistant Grok.
In a post on social media last night though, Musk said he still intends to enter the world of video games. Responding to a fan saying, “video games will be dynamically generated by Grok in the future,” Musk promised that his xAI game studio “will release a great AI-generated game before the end of next year”.
He also claimed that “Grok will make a movie that is at least watchable before the end of next year and really good movies in 2027”.

Earlier this month, it was reported (via Business Insider) xAI was recruiting “video game tutors” and paying them up to $100 a day to train the AI on design concepts, mechanics and storytelling. Back in February, xAI was able to generate a basic version of Tetris and 2D game Bubble Trouble but struggled with retro sound effects.
While unveiling xAI games last year, Musk complained that “too many game studios that are owned by massive corporations” and reshared an older interview where he said “It’s really annoying when a video game gets interrupted by some [diversity, equity, and inclusion] woke bullshit. Can you just leave the video games alone. You don’t want to do things that damage art.”

Earlier this year, Musk said gaming was his “one recreational activity” and he does it to “quiet” his mind.“Some days are real tough, so playing video games is my strange solace,” he added.
However he’s been heavily criticised by the gaming community for “faking” achievements and paying other players to level up his in-game characters for him. The writer of Deus Ex recently called Musk’s love of the game the “worst legacy” of the franchise and Avowed’s art director Matt Hansen hit back at Musk’s complaints about pronouns in the fantasy game. “It’s honestly deeply surreal to have the world’s richest, shittiest boy whine about something I am making. I am quite frankly giddy. I cannot think of a single person in the world I would rather irritate.”
Over the weekend, OpenAI released a new update for its Sora generative AI platform which saw a number of videos featuring Super Mario, The Legend Of Zelda and Pokémon characters. Shortly afterwards, Nintendo promised to take “necessary action” over copyright infringement and OpenAI CEO offered more “control” for rights holders.
In other news, the thundering 2XKO anthem ‘Ties That Bind’ featuring vocals from Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante has been released.
