Elizabeth Taylor’s son responds to Taylor Swift naming a song after his mother

Elizabeth Taylor’s son Christopher Wilding has shared his thoughts on Taylor Swift naming a song after his late mother.

Wilding is the second son of Taylor and her second husband, Michael Wilding. In a new interview with People, he opened up about his thoughts on Taylor Swift naming one of the songs on her new album after his mother.

Sharing a seal of approval, Wilding shared that he thought the nods to his mum’s legacy throughout the song were “especially magical”, and that she and Swift have a lot of common ground.

“She and my mom do seem like kindred spirits,” he told the outlet, adding that he listened to the song ‘Elizabeth Taylor’ – which was featured on ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ – on “the day it became available.”

“They are both the very embodiment of female empowerment,” he added. “The way [Swift] has deftly captured the similarities and parallel tracks in their careers and personal lives is delightful.”

Swift has had a long running respect for Elizabeth Taylor, and has referenced the actor before on the ‘Reputation’ track ‘…Ready For It?’ – making a nod to her affair with Richard Burton.

She also opened up about her admiration for the Hollywood star in a recent interview, and thanked Wilding for his comments comparing her to his mother.

“My parents sent me this clip of Elizabeth Taylor’s son [Christopher] saying something very flattering, that if there were one person he might compare to his mother in the modern day, in terms of persona and … the chaos around us, he said it would be me,” she shared. “I was so flattered by that.”

The song ‘Elizabeth Taylor’ opened at Number Three on the Billboard charts, and ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ album has broken countless records, earning Swift her 15th US Number One and breaking Adele’s long-held streaming-era record for first-week sales.

Despite its huge commercial success, it has not been met with universal acclaim from the huge Swift fanbase, with some hailing it as the return of “pop perfection”, but others declaring it “the worst Taylor Swift album yet” and “boring and basic”.

Swift has addressed some of the negative feedback she has received, telling Apple Music: “I welcome the chaos. The rule of show business is if it’s the first week of my album release, and you are saying either my name or my album title, you’re helping.”

She continued: “I have a lot of respect for people’s subjective opinions on art — I’m not the art police. Everybody is allowed to feel exactly how they want and what our goal is as entertainers is to be a mirror. Oftentimes an album is a really, really wild way to look at yourself — what you’re going through in your life is gonna affect whether you relate to the music I’m putting out at any given moment.”

NME gave ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ three stars, writing: “To seek escapism is not a sin, but the best pop music makes the personal feel like life or death. ‘Speak Now’, ‘Reputation’, ‘Folklore’: her greatest works could be genuinely transformative. For the first time, ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ sees Swift not catalysed into artistic growth by love, but merely comfortably secured by it.”
