Dwayne Johnson has revealed his favourite video game of all time is Donkey Kong but he doesn’t care about the multiple sequels or spin-offs.
The arcade game Donkey Kong was originally released in 1981 before being ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986. The iconic platform game has Nintendo mascot Mario (then known as Jump Man) scaling a series of levels to rescue Pauline (aka The Lady) from the clutches of Donkey Kong.
The game was a huge success and helped establish the Japanese game developers in North America. A number of sequels and spin-offs have been released over the years, including the beloved Donkey Kong Country series and this year’s incredible Donkey Kong Bananza.
However Dwayne Johnson has no time for Donkey Kong’s impressive 44 year history. Speaking to IGN, he was asked what his favourite video game of all time was. “I gotta go with [American Football series] Madden if it’s at home. Stand up? I gotta go with the original Donkey Kong,” he replied. He was then asked if he’s played any of the other Donkey Kong games. “None of them matter [so] no.”

A number of gaming fans aren’t impressed with Johnson’s DK opinion. “Donkey Kong could be a mediocre actor, but The Rock could never write the ‘DK Rap’,” replied one fan. “He clearly hasn’t played Bananza,” said another. “Funny how The Rock says ‘none of them matter’ but that’s how gamers feel about half his movies,” wrote a third.
Dwayne Johnson has previously starred in a couple of video game adaptations. He played Sgt. Asher “Sarge” Mahonin in 2005’s Doom and Davis Okoye in 2018’s Rampage. Both films got middling reviews. His latest project The Smashing Machine is a biopic of UFC fighter Mark Kerr and Johnson’s performance as Kerr is being tipped for Oscar glory.

A four-star NME review reads: “The Smashing Machine shows off a very different side to Johnson. Pulling no punches in its depiction of Kerr’s personal problems, it’s a powerful film that should see Johnson rack up a few Best Actor nods come awards season. In short, this is a thoroughly entertaining sports biopic that packs one hell of a sentimental gutpunch. It’s smashing stuff.”
In other news, Microsoft has added more than 90 new titles to Xbox Game Pass as part of a controversial update that’s made the service a lot more expensive.
