Doja Cat has joined in on the uproar surrounding Sydney Sweeney’s controversial American Eagle advert.
The Euphoria star divided opinions when she starred in a new ad campaign for American Eagle, which repeatedly uses the slogan, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”.
Many have been quick to criticise the “jeans” and “genes” homophone, and suggest that pairing the actor – who has blue eyes and blonde hair – with the tagline makes it feel like it has racist undertones and is reminiscent of dog-whistling eugenics.
Now, Doja Cat has joined in on the backlash to the ad, posting a video on TikTok that sees her mimicking what Sweeney says in one of the ads.
In an over-the-top Southern drawl, Doja repeats the line from the advert: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality, and even eye colour. My jeans are blue.”
That video has now gathered over 16million views and 3.7million likes.

While some people have suggested that the slogan used in the campaign has historical links to celebrating whiteness and eugenics, others have dismissed the backlash as faux, and looking into a deeper meaning that isn’t there.
Others have criticised how the campaign looks to raise awareness for domestic violence with the new line of jeans, saying that the decision to pair this ad in particular with the cause is “tone deaf”.
Neither Sweeney nor American Eagle have spoken out on the uproar surrounding the campaign yet.
Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign is receiving criticism for a “jeans/genes” pun that some say echoes eugenics and white supremacy rhetoric.

The actor will next be seen in biopic Christy, where she is taking on the role of boxer Christy Martin. The film is due to premiere in September.
Doja Cat recently joined forces with Coldplay, J Balvin, and Tems to headline the FIFA Club World Cup final halftime show on July 13. Before then, she divided opinion when she criticised one of her fans on social media, saying that she threw their gift in the bin.
