Days after her sudden death, Diane Keaton’s family is shedding light on the case.
In a statement to People magazine, Keaton’s family revealed that the legendary actress died from pneumonia.
They wrote, “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11.”
Keaton died at the age of 79 in California, leaving behind her two kids Dexter and Duke.
As for how to remember Keaton, her family shared, “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
Keaton’s friend Carole Bayer Sager recently recalled their final meeting.
She told People magazine, “I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin. She had lost so much weight.”

Bayer Sager went on to explain why Keaton had been spending so much time away from her dream home.
“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,” Sager said. “She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost.”
Bayer Sager insisted that Keaton was still “magic light for everyone,” adding, “I just loved her. She was so special, she just lit up a room with her energy. She was happy and upbeat and taking photographs of everything she saw. She was completely creative; she never stopped creating.”
The women had collaborated to co-write what became Keaton’s first and last single, “First Christmas,” which was released in November 2024.
