‘Conjuring’ prequel and tv spin-off in the works following ‘Last Rites’ success

A prequel film and a TV show based on The Conjuring are in the works, in the wake of the box office success of the latest chapter The Conjuring: Last Rites.

Released in September, the ninth movie in the Conjuring universe has grossed $482million worldwide at the box office, the highest in the series, making over $100million more than the previous record holder, 2018’s The Nun.

Despite this, the movie’s director insisted as recently as last week (October 22) that his film is the last in the series. “It is done. This is the final chapter … that’s why we called it Last Rites” he said. “It’s the last one. There’s no other Conjuring movies. It is absolutely the end.”

Now, it appears Warner Bros and New Line, the companies behind the franchise, are thinking differently. Variety has reported that a prequel film is in the works, focusing on the early years of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators who star in the movies, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

While no official casting or creative deals have been made, Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote 2023’s The Nun II as well as Last Rites, are on board to write the screenplay. The outlet speculated that The Warrens may be played by younger actors.

Alongside that project, a TV show based on the films is in development with HBO, although it is unclear what aspect of the stories will be focused on.

In August, The Conjuring: Last Rites made headlines due to the sale of a promotional popcorn bucket of the Annabelle doll from the series, with the hole placement sparking humorous comments online.

In other news, ratings company Nielsen recently announced the most-watched horror movies for this year’s Halloween season.
