Chrissie Hynde saw “proper fucking rock band” Oasis at Wembley with Johnny Marr: “Exactly what the world needs now”

Chrissie Hynde has spoken about watching Oasis with Johnny Marr, describing them as “exactly what the world needs now”.

The Pretenders frontwoman went to see one of the huge Oasis Live ‘25 reunion shows at Wembley Stadium in London earlier this month, alongside the former Smiths guitarist and his daughter Sonny, as well as Pretenders lead guitarist James Walbourne.

Now, Hynde has posted on Instagram about her experience at the show. “James and I went with @johnnymarrgram to see @oasis the other week,” she wrote. “They were great as one would expect.”

“Saw a bunch of old pals in the audience and was dancing with Kate Moss to support act, the excellent voiced @richardashcroftofficial.”

“I always remind Kate that she missed her calling, and could’ve been a singer. She reminded me that, ‘For me, it was either Woolworths or modelling.’ Because Kate rarely does interviews (unlike every other celebrity on the planet) people don’t know what a riot she is. Well, she is, and now you know…”

“Oasis were in great form,” she added. “There is still nothing better than a rock band doing their thing with a minimal light show and no extra people cluttering the stage. In other words, a proper fucking rock band! Exactly what the world needs now.”

Marr was briefly a member of the Pretenders in 1987 after he left The Smiths and has remained friends with Hynde ever since. Earlier this year, Hynde revealed they had recently spoken about how “nothing is ‘cool’ anymore”.

The Pretenders also brought our Marr as a guest during their Glastonbury 2023 set for versions of ‘Back On The Chain Gang’ and ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’. Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney were also present for the performance.

Chrissie Hynde’s relationship with Oasis, meanwhile, dates back to 2015 when she joined Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn on a version of The Clash’s ‘Brand New Cadillac’ for Paul Simonon’s 60th birthday party.

After their final Edinburgh show on Tuesday (August 12), Oasis will then head for a pair of performances in Dublin’s Croke Park on August 16 and 17, before heading across the Atlantic for the North American tour. Dates in Toronto, Chicago, East Rutherford, Pasadena and Mexico City will take them to the middle of September, when they head back for two final nights at Wembley.

Later in the year, they play in South Korea, Japan, Australia, Argentina, Chile and Brazil.

NME gave Oasis’ first concert at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium a glowing five-star review, writing: “After a ‘90s heyday and an often maligned post-millennium era, this is Oasis redesigned for the 21st Century.”

“Playing before a pop-art-meets-psychedelia visual spectacular that never distracts but will look sick on a phone, they seem the quintessential stadium band playing the greatest hits of greatest hits,” it added.
