Charli XCX to star in Dakota Johnson’s first film as director

Charli XCX is in talks to join the cast of A Tree Is Blue, the directorial debut of Dakota Johnson.

The ‘Brat’ singer has taken on an increasing number of acting roles in recent years, most recently appearing in 100 Nights Of Hero, which closed this year’s London Film Festival. She has also appeared in the TV show Overcompensating as a comedic version of herself.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that she is potentially joining a cast that includes Jessica Alba, with Madame Web star Johnson behind the camera for the first time producing and directing. As yet, no further details have been released about the production.

Charli XCX will next be seen in The Moment, a new A24 film which announced its cast earlier this month (October 9). The cast includes Kylie Jenner, Rachel Sennett, and Stath Lets Flats’ Jamie Demetriou.

In May, the star shared a video of herself pitching an “It Girl” version of Final Destination. “The reason I love these movies is that they really just are about hot people getting killed” she said. “You know, there’s no moral backbone to the story, it really is just ‘they’re hot, they’re cursed, and they deserve to die’”.

On the music side of things, she recently refused to be drawn on whether Taylor Swift’s ‘Actually Romantic’ is a diss track aimed at her, despite fans connecting lyrics with an alleged feud.

On Saturday (October 18), Charli XCX joined Lorde on stage at a concert at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum to perform ‘Girl, so confusing’ together. The remix of the song came about when she admitted feeling jealousy toward Lorde, with the two sharing their feelings in a new version of the track.

The on-stage appearance was described by one fan as feeling “like an apology letter from the universe for everything pop’s been missing lately.”
