A quietly canceled Avatar: The Last Airbender fighting game has been reincarnated under a new development studio, with a trailer highlighting what fans of the popular animated series can expect from the one-on-one 2D fighter.
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game (a working title) was revealed during an Avatar: The Last Airbender 20th anniversary panel at New York Comic Con, and is slated for a summer 2026 release. It will feature 12 playable characters at launch, with more to come as part of a seasonal release model.
While it’s billed as a 1v1 fighter (and looks that way in the game’s debut trailer), its description on Steam lists support characters that will influence a fighter’s play style and grant new special moves. Some of the characters highlighted in the trailer include Aang, Korra, Zuko, Toph, Katara, Sokka, and Azula.
Visually, Avatar Legends looks to capture the look-and-feel of the beloved animated show, with a hand-drawn 2D art style and an emphasis on movement-centric gameplay and a “unique flow system.” The game will feature a single-player campaign sporting an original story, as well as a combo trials mode and “best-in-class net code and cross play” for online multiplayer.
“Designed for both newcomers and veterans, it channels the energy of classic fighting games while breaking new ground in movement, style, and combat expression,” the game’s Steam page reads.
An untitled Avatar fighting game in development under Maximum Entertainment was canceled with little fanfare last year via a quarterly earnings report. This newly resurrected version is coming from Gameplay Group International, a developer that, as recently spotlighted by Gamesbeat, seems to specialize in reviving canceled games that show promise.
In other Avatar news, Saber Interactive is working on a “AAA” Avatar game set thousands of years in the series’ past and starring a “never-before-seen” Avatar. An animated Avatar feature film, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, is set to release in October 2026. Another animated sequel series, Avatar: Seven Havens, also in the works.
