‘Bugonia’ ‘bald screening’ shaves people’s heads in honour of Emma Stone

A screening of the film Bugonia has been held for people who are bald or were willing to shave their heads, mimicking Emma Stone’s appearance in the film.

In Yorgos Lanthimos’ dark satire, the two-time Oscar winner plays a powerful CEO who is kidnapped by one of her employees (Jesse Plemons), who believes she is an alien destroying the planet. One of the first parts of her capture involves shaving her head, which her captors believe block alien signals.

Last week, organisation DoLa put out a post advertising a screening at The Culver Theater in Los Angeles. “Are you bald, or willing to shave your head?” the post read. “On Monday, 10/20, head to @theculvertheater for a FREE advanced screening of @bugoniafilm – the new @focusfeatures fever dream from Yorgos Lanthimos, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

It continued: “Have hair? A barber will be on-site starting at 6PM to shave it all off. Screening starts at 8PM. This is real. And yes, part of it will be filmed.”

On Sunday (October 20), the screening went ahead, with bald people in attendance. Videos have circulated online of people getting their head shaved for the event, although other pictures appear to show people were permitted to enter wearing bald caps.

The screening echoes a similar event that happened at the same cinema in August, where the film The Long Walk was shown to people willing to walk on a treadmill for the entire runtime of the movie. The concept echoed the film’s premise, where a group of young men embark on a deadly contest where they have to walk continuously or risk being killed.

Bugonia is released October 24, and sees Stone reuniting with Lanthimos after appearing together in the films Poor Things and Kinds Of Kindness.

Recently, Stone discussed the extraterrestrial element of the film, saying she does believe aliens exist.
