‘BioShock’ remake scrapped and new game in “turmoil”

A new report claims that the beloved BioShock series is in turmoil with the long-awaited follow-up to Infinite still not ready for launch.

The original BioShock was released in 2007 with players tasked with escaping the underwater city of Rapture and its mutated inhabitants. The sci-fi first-person shooter sold more than 3million units when it first launched and is considered one of the greatest video games ever made.

BioShock 2 followed in 2010 and BioShock Infinite was released in 2013 while a remastered version of the original game followed in 2017. In total, the series has sold more than 43million games.

In 2019 it was announced that a new BioShock game was in development and work had started several years earlier.

Last year, a senior developer at Cloud Chamber said work on BioShock 4 was “ramping up” and the studio was hiring more staff. However no footage from the project has been shared while details about plot, gameplay or release date have yet to be shared.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, the project is in “turmoil” after the game failed an internal review. Now publishers 2K Games are overhauling BioShock 4 due to concerns about the game’s narrative.

As a result, Studio head Kelley Gilmore has been replaced and creative director Hogarth de la Plante has been moved off the project. There are concerns about further lay-offs due to staff at a recent meeting at Cloud Chamber being told the company needs to become more “agile and efficient”.

“We are working hard to set BioShock up for the best possible future,” 2K Games said in a statement. “Right now, we have a good game, but we are committed to delivering a great one. We are working closely with leadership at the studio to define this path.” The studio also confirmed the leadership change and said that it is “fully committed to ensuring we deliver a BioShock game that exceeds the lofty expectations of our fans.”

The same report claims that a remake of the original BioShock was in the works but was shelved earlier this year.

In other news, Hollow Knight: Silksong fans are outraged that last week’s Nintendo Direct didn’t update them about the long-awaited sequel.
