Battlefield 6 Won’t Have Ray Tracing In Order To “Focus On Performance”

Battlefield 6 won’t have ray tracing, as the team instead is focusing on performance and optimization, according to the game’s technical director.

In an interview with ComicBook, Ripple Effect (one of the studios that comprises Battlefield Studios) technical director Christian Buhl said it doesn’t have plans for ray tracing at launch or in the near future.

“That was because we wanted to focus on performance,” Buhl said. “We wanted to make sure that all of our effort was focused on making the game as [optimized] as possible for the default settings and default users.”

The decision to not include ray tracing was made “early on” Buhl said. In a separate interview, Buhl may have revealed why ray tracing wasn’t a priority for the team, stating that a “meaningful percentage” of players during the Battlefield 6 beta were using minimum recommended specs or below.

“Min spec is certainly one of our most important specs,” Bruhl said. “It’s super important from both a commercial and business perspective–we want as many people as possible playing the game.”

An emphasis on ray-tracing would definitely go against that philosophy of looking to ensure the game plays well on as wide a range of PCs as possible. In yet another interview, Bruhl lamented the need for Battlefield 6’s Secure Boot requirement on PC, something that caused headaches for some players and left them unable to participate in the beta. He stated he wished “everyone could play” but that Secure Boot is needed to prevent cheaters and make it easier for EA to detect them.

EA recently revealed Battlefield 6’s PC specs for launch, even as recent leaks from its Battlefield Labs playtests have revealed more about Battlefield 6’s larger maps and its battle royale mode.

Those excited for Battlefield 6 won’t have to wait long, as the game launches on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on October 10. In the meantime, players can play Battlefield 2042 to unlock free Battlefield 6 cosmetics as part of the game’s “Road To Battlefield 6” event.
