‘Atomfall’ soundtrack to get limited-edition vinyl release

The soundtrack to Atomfall is set to get a limited edition vinyl release.

Developed by independent studio Rebellion, Atomfall was released back in March and has been played by more than 2.5million players. Now the soundtrack is set to get a limited-edition vinyl release, via SPACELAB9.

Pre-orders for the vinyl are now live via SPACELAB9 while a number of exclusive coloured variants will be available via Rebellion in the coming days. The vinyl will come in a gatefold sleeve featuring bespoke propaganda art, in-game iconography and behind-the-scenes commentary from Rebellion’s head of design Ben Fisher.

The soundtrack was inspired by traditional British folk music, the heavy brass and piano textures of ‘70s BBC sci-fi and the experimental electronics of Radiophonic Workshop with Rebellion also taking influence from 1973 horror The Wicker Man, 1971’s The Blood On Satan’s Claw and classic Doctor Who to create Atomfall’s “strange version of the north of England.”

Atomfall takes place in an alternative Britain that never got the music of The Beatles. It’s something Rebellion’s Audio Director Graham Gatheral found liberating.

“The Beatles ushered in a wave of pop optimism, but in Atomfall’s alternate history, that moment never arrives,” he told NME. “The soundtrack didn’t need to deal with bright guitar riffs or communal singalongs; instead, the musical language could remain starker and more austere. Without that cultural shift, the music of this world leans into older traditions – folk songs passed down through generations, the rigid echoes of military brass, and the unsettling hum of early experimental electronics.”

In total, Gatheral created 90minutes of original music for Atomfall but the 13-track vinyl release will be built around the combat music. “We wanted to capture the brutal, raw energy of Atomfall’s factions, mysteries, and environments,” he explained. “To balance that intensity, we placed the title screen and village ambient tracks at the end of each side, to act as a kind of breather. It’s less a straight narrative and more a curated immersion in the world’s rawness and unpredictability.”

Despite the 1960s setting, Atomfall’s fantastical story about paranoia, trust and control has connected with players around the world. “We might be telling a story set in a fictionalised ’60s Britain, but mistrust of authority, fear of contamination, and paranoia in tight-knit communities are things people recognise instantly. The audio helps make that personal; by keeping the soundscape ambiguous, it allows players to project their own fears onto the world.”

“Our job is to create natural environments that sound dark, immersive, and believable, but without dictating how the player should feel,” he continued. “That space for personal interpretation is what helps Atomfall stick in people’s heads.”

The Atomfall soundtrack has already had a digital release as part of the deluxe Quarantine Edition of the game but a vinyl release is something Rebellion have been thinking about for a long while. ”The music was made with analogue synths, vintage test gear, and other non-digital sources, so vinyl mirrors the sound’s raw, immediate character,” said Gatheral.

“I hope people come away with a sense of mystery, unease, and beauty – that strange combination that defines Atomfall,” he continued. “I hope it transports them into an alternative 1960s Britain, one that feels both familiar and alien. If the record can conjure that uneasy, fractured world in someone’s imagination, even away from the game, then I feel it’s done its job.”
