Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler “doesn’t want to tour” and “can’t tour”, reveals Joe Perry

Aerosmith’s Joe Perry has put a dampener on hopes of a new tour, saying that Steven Tyler both “can’t” and “doesn’t want to”.

The rock icons announced their sudden retirement from touring in August 2024, following frontman Steven Tyler suffering a serious vocal cord injury.

The band’s final live show was held as part of their ‘Peace Out’ tour, which began in 2023, but only saw the band play three shows.

While touring has been confirmed as off the cards for the band now, they have managed to play the odd show in the time since. In February, Tyler returned to the live stage for a charity event that saw him sing a number of Aerosmith classics, including ‘Walk This Way’, ‘Dream On’ and ‘Sweet Emotion’. That was followed by a similar event in April that saw Tyler and Perry reunite on stage for the first time in two years.

Tyler then appeared at the Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath farewell show, which was held in Birmingham on July 5 and came with a star-studded line-up.

At that event, he formed a supergroup with Tom Morello, The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood and Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt, Quiet Riot’s Rudy Sarzo and Blink-182’s Travis Barker, and played the ‘50s blues song ‘Train Kept A Rollin’. He then played again at the farewell show, joining forces with Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Corgan, Sammy Hagar and more for a medley of ‘Walk This Way’ and Led Zeppelin’s ‘Whole Lotta Love’.

Now, guitarist Joe Perry has put a dampener on hopes of a full-blown comeback from Aerosmith, and said that while the odd show may still be possible, there is little chance of a tour being announced.

“I would bet that there’s an Aerosmith show left,” he told WBUR. “There’s been talk about doing a documentary; that might be part of it. I’ve been spending a lot of time with Steven and he just doesn’t want to tour, and he can’t tour.”

“It’s tough. I’m not sure I would want to go out and book another 40-city tour. It’s a long way to the top and staying there takes it out of you, especially an Aerosmith tour,” he added.

The comments follow on from what Perry said in an appearance on Sirius XM’s Trunk Nation last month, suggesting that the members were in talks about a return to the stage.

“I know there’s gotta be at least another Aerosmith gig, and I’m not looking forward to putting the set list together for that one, but I don’t know, man. We’ll just have to see,” he said.

In the time away from Aerosmith, Perry has announced North American tour dates for his The Joe Perry Project – marking the first from the band in two years. The dates commence in Florida tonight (April 13) and conclude in Los Angeles next month. Visit here for tickets.

Bassist Tom Hamilton has also gone on to confirm details of his latest project, working with a band called Close Enemies. The group is also comprised of drummer Tony Brock, singer Chasen Hampton, and guitarists Peter Stroud and Trace Foster.

The drummer was a founding member of English band The Babys and has also worked with Elton John, Rod Stewart and more. Foster was Hamilton’s bass technician in Aerosmith, and Stroud has previously worked with names including Sheryl Crow and Don Henley.

Earlier this summer, Hamilton spoke more about the future of the ‘80s icons, confirming that he “doesn’t know what the future holds” for Steven Tyler and co. because of the vocal injury.
