Adam Sandler currently has three movies streaming in the top 10 on Netflix: Murder Mystery, Murder Mystery 2, and Hotel Transylvania.
Adam Sandler is currently dominating the streaming charts with three movies in the Netflix top 10 right now, according to FlixPatrol. While it makes sense that two of the movies are the actor’s most recent film, Murder Mystery 2 (coming in at #1), which just released last week, and the film’s prequel, Murder Mystery (coming in at #6), Sandler’s third movie in the top 10 seems to be coming in a little out of left field—Hotel Transylvania, an animated kids’ comedy about a vampire who owns a hotel is streaming as the eighth most popular movie on Netflix right now.
Needless to say, if you’re in the mood for something goofy to watch on Netflix tonight, the general consensus has determined that Adam Sandler is the answer. Here’s what to know about the prolific actor’s three top 10 films:
The current number one film on Netflix is Murder Mystery 2, the sequel to the Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston-led romantic comedy/crime thriller film Murder Mystery. Murder Mystery was released in 2019 and follows a couple who have been married for 15 years and who finally decide to go on their honeymoon to Europe. While on the flight over, Aniston’s character, Audrey Spitz, meets a dashing young billionaire named Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans), who invites the couple to his yacht, which is where the Spitzs witness the first murder of the movie.
When Nick Spitz (Adam Sandler) and his wife are investigated for being the murderers, the pair attempt to solve the crime to clear their names, and comedic murder mystery shenanigans unfold. In addition to Sandler, Aniston, and Evans, Murder Mystery also features Terrance Stamp, Gemma Arterton, David Williams, Dany Boon, John Kani, and Adeel Akhtar. The film was penned for Netflix by James Vanderbilt (also known for Scream and Zodiac), and it was directed by Kyle Newacheck (Community and Parks and Recreation).
Netflix’s Murder Mystery received mixed reviews, with the final Rotten Tomatoes consensus awarding it a rotten 44 percent approval from critics, and audience members generally agreed with the critical review, giving the movie a 45 percent approval rating. However, despite the low reviews, the film still won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Comedic Movie in 2019, and Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston were nominated for Favorite Male and Female Movie Stars.
Murder Mystery 2 is freshly released to Netflix and has been available to stream since March 31. The Sequel also stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, reprising the Spitzs, who are now professional detectives following their success at the end of the first movie. The sequel sees many familiar faces reprising their roles from the first film, including John Kani, Adeel Akhtar, and Dany Boon, while Mark Strong, Melanie Laurent, Jodie Turner-Smith, Kuhoo Verma and Enrique Arce join the cast.
James Vanderbilt returned to write the script for the sequel, while the job of the director changed hands to Jeremy Garelick (The Binge). This time, the Spitzs are solving an abduction case that occurs when their friend Maharaja is abducted at his own wedding. So far, fans are liking the Netflix sequel slightly more than the first film, rating the Adam Sandler movie with a 53 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics find it to be about as enjoyable as the first, giving it a 43 percent approval rating.
Despite the mixed reviews, Murder Mystery 2 is the king of the streaming charts, triumphantly sitting at Netflix’s number-one spot for movies streamed in the United States. However, the victory has not come without a few sacrifices, as more than one story about Adam Sandler getting injured on set has leaked to the presses.
Jennifer Aniston herself mentioned a moment during the Netflix film’s production when a stunt went wrong, and Adam Sandler got hit in the face so hard it brought tears to his eyes. Another report claimed that Sandler had to get his hip replaced after damaging it doing risky stunts. Perhaps what we’re learning is that the King of Comedy should probably stick to what he knows best, and avoid doing dangerous stunts from now on.
Hotel Transylvania is the third Adam Sandler movie topping the Netflix charts this week. In this charming 2012 animated feature, Sandler voices Dracula, only in this version of the vampire’s story, he’s swapped terror and murder for hospitality and parenting skills. Sandler’s Dracula owns a high-end resort for monsters, far away from the human world, but when a human named Jonathan (Andy Sandberg) discovers the resort and falls for Dracula’s daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez), Dracula goes into overprotective mode as he adjusts to the unusual romance.
The script was written by three talented Hollywood writers, Peter Baynham, Robert Smigel, and Todd Durham, and was directed by Genndy Tartakovsky. Tartakovsky was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, and Hotel Transylvania won the Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Voice For An Animated Movie for Adam Sandler’s Dracula. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with a consensus score of 44 percent, while audiences loved the movie, giving it a 72 percent approval on Rotten Tomatoes.
While Adam Sandler has proven that he is a capable actor in both comedy and drama, he is most known for being a goofy man-child in many of his films. If goofy is what you’re looking for, then it sounds like the majority of Netflix subscribers agree with you. Why not pick one of Sandler’s current top three movies for your next movie night?
