Star Citizen, the upcoming space game that’s racked up more than $850million via crowdfunding, might not be released next year.
Star Citizen was originally announced back in 2012, with the initial crowdfunder raising $2.1million. The game was set to launch in 2014 but was delayed. An early access version was made available in 2017 and a full release is planned for either 2027 or 2028, according to creator Chris Roberts.
Squadron 42, a standalone single-player adventure set within the world of Star Citizen and featuring the voices of Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, and Mark Hamill, had originally been set to launch in 2014 alongside the base game but has also been delayed several times. Earlier this year, Cloud Imperium Games said it will finally launch at some point next year. However, according to content director Jared Huckaby, it might be delayed once again.
He said Cloud Imperium Games won’t be showcasing anything new at upcoming fan event CitizenCon because the team are “heads down” working on the game (via PC Gamer). “We drew a line in the sand when we said 2026,” he continued. “I don’t know if we’re going to make it. I just know that we’re going to do every single thing possible to make it.”
🚨CIG flat-out says NO Squadron 42 info at CitizenCon… Translation: another delay. Zero chance it drops next year… they’ll stretch it for another 2 years and squeeze every penny. Absolutely pathetic.#StarCitizen #pcgaming pic.twitter.com/pYz3XluS2v

Taking to Reddit shortly afterwards, he attempted to backtrack on his doubts. “I said that I personally cannot tell you what the future holds, because quite honestly, that’s the responsible answer for me to give with the way that video games are made. Not our video games, ALL video games. I meant what I said in the most literal manner possible: that I can’t sit here and tell you what the future holds, because in the entire history of video game development, who’s ever been able to?”
“Insane realising that all their celebrity actors filmed their scenes 10 years ago, and it still doesn’t even sound like they’re fully confident about launching in 2026,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “Star Citizen is just a weird cult centered around giving money to Chris Roberts by people who are in too deep to admit they make a mistake. Of course it’s never coming out,” said another. “I’m so excited to watch the Netflix documentary about the greatest swindle in the history of video games,” added a third.

Last month, Roberts said he hoped the launch of Star Citizen: Squadron 42 will be “almost as big an event [as Grand Theft Auto 6],” which is due to launch May 26, 2026. “Other than GTA 6, it’s probably the biggest-budget AAA game,” he added.
The Star Citizen kickstarter is still live and has raised $865,183,332 from more than 5million donors. Yesterday (September 14) more than $300,000 was donated to the game’s development.
In other news, Borderlands 4 boss Randy Pitchford has hit back at the negative reviews and reports that the game isn’t running correctly. Borderlands 4 is “a premium game made for premium gamers” and shouldn’t be expected to run on older computers. “If you’re trying to drive a monster truck with a leaf blower’s motor, you’re going to be disappointed.”
